THE REFERENCE GUIDE / 01

How to make a character
reference sheet from one image.

A useful sheet shows what makes the character recognizable.
Here is how to prepare, review and hand off your reference.

01. Choose one readable starting image.

Start with a single character, with the face and clothing easy to see. A full-body image is best for a turnaround. A portrait can work for facial expressions. Use a simple background and avoid overlapping characters.

  • Keep the head and feet inside the image for body views.
  • Use a front or slight three-quarter face for expressions.
  • Upload PNG, JPG or WebP under 20 MB and 24 megapixels.

02. Write a brief for identity, not a whole scene.

Record the recognizable hair, face, outfit and recurring accessories. Use concrete details such as a short copper bob, olive jacket or round glasses. Add what the image hides, including the back of the clothing. Keep a brief separate from story prose.

  • Name the features that should repeat in every image.
  • Describe hidden details rather than leaving them to chance.
  • Avoid conflicting directions such as two different outfits.

03. Choose the set that fits the handoff.

A complete reference sheet combines four body angles with four expressions. A turnaround focuses on silhouette and outfit. An expression sheet focuses on the face. Choose the smaller preset when it matches your task.

04. Check consistency before exporting.

Compare facial proportions, hairstyle, outfit colors and recurring accessories. For body angles, check the side profile and the back. AI references can reinterpret small details and do not guarantee exact orthographic alignment.

  • Check the eye spacing, nose, jaw and hair shape.
  • Compare clothing, accessories and body proportions.
  • Request one specific correction rather than a broad redesign.

05. Export a clean, labeled reference set.

Download separate images when you need to use each view independently. Include the contact sheet for a quick overview and the brief to explain hidden design decisions. If you are handing the sheet to a modeler or animator, resolve any inconsistent proportions before production.
